Question & Answer: What is a Safelist?

QUESTION: Exactly what is a safelist, and what does it do? I see people talk about them all the time, but they seem to assume everyone is born knowing what they are, and I don’t have a clue. I just skip over that stuff, but guess it’s time to display my ignorance, just because I’m curious.

ANSWER: A safelist is a mailing list that allows you to email your advertisement to other list members in exchange, you agree to receive advertising emails from the other members. Then number of mailings you can send is usually 3 to 5 per week.

Many more experienced marketers believe safelists are a complete watse of time for web site promotion since most members are usually there for the same reason - to sell something.

Some of the more popular safelists have well over 40,000 members. They all allow you to sign up for free and email your ads to other free members, but it’s usually a much smaller number like 200. When you upgrade, you can email the entire group.

Many of the members don’t bother to read the emails, but if your subject is catchy, who knows.

If you do decide to try them out, make sure you use a separate email account so as not to clog your regular mailbox. As with many other programs, there are alot of useless safelists out there. I can count the ones I recommend on one hand!

Yes…safelists are a complete waste of time. They benefit no one but the owner of the safelist.
